*TIME CHANGE*

Change the time in the following sentences by using a different verb tense and replacing any necessary time clues. Each student should choose a different verb tense.

Last Halloween, we went trick or treating with the neighbours and their young children. At first, the little kids didn’t know what to make of the activity, but by the time we reached the third house on our route, they had it all figured out. The little ghosts and goblins ran up to the house before all of the bigger kids and excitedly rang the doorbell.

Before ten o’clock on Halloween, we had gone trick or treating with the neighbours and their young children. At first, the little kids had not known what to make of the activity, but by the time we had reached the third house on our route, they had it all figured out. The little ghosts and goblins had run up to the house before all of the bigger kids and excitedly had rung the doorbell.

Well done, Olena!

Good try, Audrey and Liudmila. But note that the phrase "by the time" does not require an auxiliary verb ("will" or "had"). You can simply say "by the time we reach" or "by the time we reached".

On the other hand, Liudmila, if you want to use the past perfect, you should add an auxiliary ("had") to the verb "had". This can sound a little strange, but it is correct: "they had had it all figured out".

Note also that after the conjunction ("and"), you do not have to repeat the auxiliary (or even the verb if it is the same). In this case, you could say: "The little ghosts and goblins had run up to the house... and excitedly rung the doorbell".
