If a sentence is singular, change it to the plural; if it is plural, change it to the singular.

The birthday dinner was relaxing and enjoyable; I ate traditional food and exchanged a gift with my son and daughter-in-law.

Vocabulary building is important for both reading comprehension and writing. Use the following two words (note the part of speech) in one sentence.

SYNONYMS & ANTONYMS, Feb. 13th, 2013

We can describe something obviously bad as flagrant. Provide a synonym and antonym for this word--each student should write a different word—just one word for each per student!

**ACTIVE & PASSIVE, Feb. 15th, 2013**

Use the verb with the base ring in two different sentences. Sentence 1 should be in the active voice; sentence 2 should reword the sentence to the passive voice.

**TIME CHANGE, Feb. 15th, 2013**

Change the time in the following sentence by using a different verb tense and  replacing and necessary time clues.

We celebrate Pancake Day by cooking a lot of traditional pancakes because we think the homemade ones taste better than the ones served in restaurants. Tradition also calls for using lemon juice and sugar on top of the pancakes. The idea is to use up lots of good, rich ingredients before the fast for Lent starts the next day.

**SENTENCE COMBINATION, Feb, 15th, 2013**

Learning to combine ideas into more complex sentences is an important skill in writing. There are many ways to do this--many possible bonus points! Try to combine the following three sentences.

1. Many people celebrated Pancake Day by cooking pancakes at home .

2. Other people went to restaurants some of which offered “all you can eat” pancakes that day.

3. Pancake Day is more properly known as Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent, which is when Christians start the Lenten fast.
